LINCOLNTON, NC -- A Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputy observing traffic on NC Highway 18 in western Lincoln County early Wednesday morning observed a vehicle speeding north on the highway.

Deputy Shannon Pippen was stationary at Davis and Son Orchards around 2:00 a.m. when he clocked the vehicle traveling in excess of the 45 mile per hour speed limit and pursued the vehicle to a location near the Catawba County line where he executed a traffic stop.  Deputy Pippen approached the vehicle and found a male and female inside the vehicle and two tires on the rear seat.

The driver, Micheal Allen Bumgarner, 27, of 5327 Old NC 18, Connelly Springs, NC, told the officer he got the tires from a friend but couldn’t provide any additional information.  He told the deputy that he did not have a driver’s license and the passenger, Tanya Lynn Gray, 31, of the same address as Bumgarner, could only provide an identification card.

A check by authorities turned up outstanding warrants on both individuals.  Bumgarner admitted to taking the tires from a residence on Highway 18 and the deputy transported him back to the residence.  A Cleveland County officer was dispatched to the scene and charged Bumgarner with larceny of the tires. The stolen tires, valued at $350, were returned to the owner.

Bumgarner is charged with one misdemeanor count each of Probation Violation, Larceny, Speeding, Driving While License Revoked, Open Container of Alcohol, and Possession of Stolen Goods.  He was placed in the Harven A. Crouse Detention Center before being released on a $4,000 secured bond.

Tanya Lynn Gray was served outstanding warrants for Failure to Appear and misdemeanor Larceny.  She was released on a $750 secured bond.
