Cow Crashes Through Roof of House, Kills Man
BRAZIL--A Brazilian man has died after a cow crashed through his roof and landed on him while he was sleeping.
Joao Maria de Souza, 45, and his wife, Leni, had been lying in bed when the 3,000-pound animal fell through the roof. Many believe the cow used the hill located next to the home to climb onto the top of the house. Sources say the cow fell eight feet onto de Souza's side of the bed after the roof proved unable to support its weight.
De Souza went to the hospital with a fractured leg and received care for several hours. Doctors say they think he later died from internal bleeding. De Souza's wife and the cow were OK, according to reports.
De Souza's brother said he didn't believe the cow was entirely to blame for the death.
"Being crushed by a cow in your bed is the last way you expect to leave this earth," he reportedly said. "But in my view, it wasn't the cow that killed our Joao - it was the unacceptable time he spent waiting to be examined."
The hospital, however, denied this accusation and said de Souza received proper care, sources say.
De Souza's mother said her son had been caught in an unlucky situation.
"I didn't bring up my son to be killed by a falling cow," she reportedly said. "He nearly died when he was two and got meningitis, but I worked hard to buy medicines for him, and he survived. And now, he's lying in his bed and gets crushed to death by a cow. There's no justice in the world."
Sources say the cow's owner may face charges for de Souza's death.
