DNC Protesters Could Be Armed During ConventionCHARLOTTE, NC - Democratic National Convention protesters could be armed during the convention. North Carolina state law allows concealed weapons with a permit. The prospect of protesters with weapons has the Queen City on high alert. Michael Zytkow is with the coalition to protest at the DNC. He says protesting is his first amendment right, “We have the right to protest within sight and sound of the convention."
With just five months until the DNC, protesters are getting ready for a massive demonstration.
Local residents we spoke with said their concerned that protesters are able to carry a gun during a time like the convention.
Larry Hyatt has owned Hyatt Gun Store for 52 years. He says he is noticing a trend that he has never seen before, "We've had more people buy guns in a three months period than any three month period in the history of our business, and we’ve never seen anything like this."
Hyatt says we need to be careful of the people buying guns without permits,
"It’s the unlicensed, bad people that don't care about what the law is. That is who is dangerous."
Still local business owners like Cassie Parsons with Harvest Moon Grill are looking on the bright side, "Every day you wake up in the morning and something could happen and yes it could be a concern but it’s not for me.”
Charlotte Mecklenburg Police are planning on adding 2400 officers from outside departments to its force. Still, violence at conventions in the past leaves many with mixed feelings.
Hyatt says he’s excited about the DNC, “We are excited about the DNC and what it will do for local businesses but were also concerned about the violence it could potentially bring.”
