CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Purple ribbons on trees is a silent reminder of the 53 people killed this year in North Carolina at the hands of a partner.

The Domestic Violence Advocacy Council hosted a memorial tree lighting at CMPD headquarters in Uptown.

Survivors, family and friends remembered the victims, telling stories about each one.

Advocates say domestic violence affects people from all walks of life.  The tree is up now through January 5th.
