CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Wendy Kidd normally plays the role of a scrap booker, cookie baker,
and substitute teacher. "I think it's important for women to feel safe on their own," Kidd said.
But, today, this 52-year-old mom and former Girl Scout leader is working on some basic pistol
fundamentals. "It's good to feel self reliant and to have these skills to be able to draw on when you
need them," Kidd said.

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office said it has seen a 200 percent increase in gun permit applications. From around 65 a day last week to more than 200 a day this week. Instructors have also seen a spike in interest in their basic pistol training and concealed carry classes. At D.E.S. training in Rock Hill, they are sold out through February. "I think definitely an awareness level has increased  rapidly and more people are seeking out professional opportunities," said DeWayne Saunders of DES Training.

In a world where violence is a sad reality, Wendy said she's glad she's now armed with the necessary knowledge and skills. "I don't like the thought that I would ever have to draw my gun to defend myself or my family. I know that's the reality of the situation...but I don't like it," Kidd said.

Mecklenburg County Sheriff's deputies don't offer personal safety classes but  they can refer you to instructors they work with.
