Burke County Elementary Teacher Arrested on Numerous Sex Offenses

BURKE COUNTY, NC -- A Burke County elementary teacher has been arrested and charged with several sex offenses. On Wednesday, Burke County detectives say they were contacted by the FBI and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation in reference to a child pornography investigation. Detectives learned that Michael Alexander, was connected to an international child pornography investigation coordinated online.

This was uncovered after police in Barcelona, Spain arrested Javier Varela, a suspect who was involved in a takedown known as Operation "Filipo." 
 
Authorities contacted the United States Embassy and provided them with information about Alexander.

Detectives learned Alexander had been a teacher in the Burke County school system for approximately twelve years, first at Glen Alpine Elementary, and then at Hildebran Elementary School, where he was currently employed as a drama teacher.

He is charged with one count of felony first degree sex offense with a child, three counts of felony indecent liberties with a child, and five counts of felony second degree exploitation of a minor.
 
 He is currently being held in custody at the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility under a $1,000,000.00 secured bond.
 
This case is still under investigation and authorities say further charges are pending.
