Finger Pointing After Fall Out Over Sheriff's Office ContractINDIAN TRAIL, NC- There was finger pointing on Monday as Indian Trail works out a new deal with the Union County Sheriff's Office. The town scrapped a plan to start its own police force during a heated meeting over the weekend. Some say things got out of hand on Saturday as town leaders decided to continue using union county deputies for law enforcement. "There are times when you just need to lay down your ego and lay down your pride and do what's in the best interest of the community," said David Waddell, an Indian Trail council member. Council members say it's now time to go back to the drawing board and develop a new contract that Waddell thinks will be very similar to the $1.5 million dollar contract they have now. "You can put anything in front of me with the Union County Sheriff's Office on it and I will vote against it. The reason is I don't want to deal with those people and you're not going to cram it down my throat," said Robert Allen, an Indian Trail council member. Allen and fellow council member Darlene Luther want the town to start its own police department.They faced fierce criticism on Saturday. As for the comments made by deputies, Allens says, "That was pure bullying and threatening and just posturing to scare people. Is that how you negotiate with somebody?" Indian Trail resident Mark Wireman hopes Allen and Luther stay out of contract negotiations with the Sheriff's Office. "The impression we got as residents is clearly that Council members Luther and Allen are not for the best will and wishes of the residents. They are clearly for themselves," said Wireman. As for the other three council members..."We're going to look beyond all the drama, beyond all the friction and take care of the business of the town," said Waddell.
