NEWTON, N.C.--It was another day at the races at the Hickory Motor Speedway. Inside one of the cars was driver Mackena Bell. "I feel like the cars pretty good and hopefully we'll do well," she said. The 21 year old started racing 9 years ago before she even had a license. "I think that when you put a helmet on the car doesn't know any different and I really don't think anybody else does," said the Mooresville resident. Bell is one of several women working their way through the world of NASCAR. "When I get out and they see my hair...maybe they wonder...man I got beat by a girl but that's what I hope they do," she said. Mackena is hoping to follow in the footsteps of Danica Patrick. Her team leaders say her success depends on breaking through the ranks in what's increasingly become a crowded field. Rev Racing's Jefferson Hodges said "The fact is there are a lot of female reacers out there and there a lot of good ones." For now, this rising star is working toward her goal. One day. And one race at a time, "There's no time limit on a dream. It's something I wanna do forever," she said. Bell is part of NASCAR's Drive for Diversity Program. It's designed to give minority and women drivers the opportunity to compete with a NASCAR team. 30 drivers have been supported since it began eight years ago. |
