Around 4 p.m. Friday, a  Gaston College student was injured when he was shot in the hip, during Basic Law Enforcement Training on the grounds of the Gastonia Police Firearms and Tactical Training Center.

A spokeswoman with Gastonia Police Department told WCCB that a student in the training was having a problem with their handgun and was getting help from an instructor when the weapon accidentally discharged, hitting the victim in the hip.

The injured student is a deputy with the Gaston County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff Alan Cloninger tells us he is in good condition at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

In a release, we learned that the Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.) class had been at the range all this week.
