INDIAN LAND, SC--Chona Vallencour moved to Indian Land from Virginia three years ago in order to be closer to family. "We searched for a home that had everything we wanted in a home and we found it," she said.

But now that perfect home is 600 feet from the proposed site of a new dump. "If we can see and smell and hear that it's gonna affect us a lot," Vallencour said.

Lancaster County officials in South Carolina are looking into building a recycling center on county owned property on Shelly Mullis Road. They say the temporary site would be across from the Shelly Woods subdivision. Where neighbors have rallied together against it. "We're not saying don't do a dump. We're just saying. Let's not do it in a residential area on an already busy road. Next to a park dedicated to a fallen officer," said Indian Land Resident Shawn Fiola.

Lancaster County Councilman Brian Carnes says he spent all morning looking for other options after hearing so much concern from the tight knit community. "We probably could have done a better job on the county side of preparing the residents for what we were thinking about," he said.

Until County officials select a site away from Vallencour and her neighbors, she says they aren't giving up. "We like this neighborhood. We want to keep it serene and we want to keep it clean,"
said Vallencour.

Lancaster County Officials are still working to determine how they will move forward with plans for the dump. A zoning hearing is scheduled for March 12.
