Investigators Probe Double-Shooting in Union County
MONROE, NC -- Authorities have identified two people that were found shot to death on Sikes Mill Road in Union County. According to detectives, shortly after 6 a.m. on Thursday, Union County 911dispatchers received a report of a shooting just north of Monroe. Officers responding to the scene found a man and a woman deceased from apparent gunshot wounds in a driveway leading to the residence. One victim was found inside the cab of a pickup truck in the driveway, and one victim was found in the driveway next to the truck.
Authorities have identified the victims as Mary Overman Ismail, 36, and Bobby Ihab Ismail, 45, both of Monroe.
Sheriff’s investigators are still classifying the incident as a death investigation. “This remains an active investigation, and we cannot conclusively comment on the cause and manner of death of the two victims until we receive information from the Medical Examiner, and we have the opportunity to review and process evidence recovered at the crime scene,” said Sheriff Eddie Cathey.
A nine-year old girl who reportedly witnessed the shootings was found by a passer-by and was taken to the Unionville Child Development Center, which is a short distance away from the crime scene. Deputies would not comment on what the witness told investigators. Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation remained on the scene throughout the morning processing the crime scene.
“This is an on-going investigation, and we are working to determine the facts and circumstances that may have led up to this tragic incident,” said Sheriff Cathey. “Until we are able to process and review all of the evidence in this incident, including a report from the Medical Examiner, we will continue to objectively call this a death investigation.”
Sheriff Cathey would not speculate as to the motive behind the crime, but did acknowledge that a weapon was recovered at the scene.
Traffic on Sikes Mill Road was rerouted while officers worked the scene until about 12:45 p.m. this afternoon. The young girl has been placed in the custody of Union County Department of Social Services until she can be released to next-of-kin.
Additional information will be forthcoming as the investigation unfolds.
