New Coal Ash Concerns at Plant in Rutherford & Cleveland Counties
RUTHERFORD COUNTY, NC - More coal ash concerns for Duke Energy. State regulators say they're worried about a leaking pipe at a plant on the border of Rutherford & Cleveland Counties.
Duke Energy staff is sampling for potentially contaminated groundwater near the Cliffside Steam Station.
State environmental officials say a corroded pipe is draining more than a thousand gallons a day.
So far, none of that has reached the Broad River.
But there are concerns because a similar pipe collapsed near a plant at Eden, NC last month, leaking tons of coal ash into the Dan River.
Duke Energy says it takes responsibility for that spill and plans to take another look at the management of ash basins.
