Local Groups Want To Bring Back The Basketball BuzzCHARLOTTE, NC- Something is buzzing around the Bobcats. "The Hornets name means a lot to the city of Charlotte," said Lynn Wall, a South Charlotte resident. "I want the name back here to re-energize the city about basketball and about our team," said Hytham Imseis, a Ballantyne resident. There's no doubt about it. Bobcats fans are holding on to Charlotte's basketball roots. That's why local groups, 'We Beelieve' and 'Bring Back the Buzz' are fighting to take back the Hornets name from New Orleans. "This is really about finding our future in the past," said John Morgan, founder of 'We Beelieve". The Hornets relocated to New Orleans in 2002 after almost 15 years in the Queen City. While in Charlotte, the team made six play-off appearances, while the Bobcats set a new record for the worst season by an NBA team in history. "We made the playoffs and made a run in 1993 so we're going to be good again. We know that's not the case, but there is that anchor, that past, that history," said Morgan. The groups have an online petition with close to 7,000 signatures. "Let's give the city the one they want," said Scotty Kent, co-founder of 'Bring Back The Buzz". "Anytime we get a Hornets sneaker, it automatically sells out. The day of the release, they're gone in an hour or no more than 90 minutes," said Michael Henry, manager at Social Status. "We love the mascot and the games were so exciting and we'd love to see that excitement back in basketball," said Wall. Bobcats owner Michael Jordan says the franchise is open to a nickname switch. But that could only happen if new orleans follows through with talks to change its name.
