Man Dies After Car Gets Trapped In Pond

CHARLOTTE,NC--A Charlotte man is dead after a car lost control and ended up in a pond just before 2:30 a.m. Thursday morning..

Police say Lewis Lamar Brice-Simms, 26, died after suffering life threatening injuries when he lost control of his 2004 Saturn Ion and ran into a pond on Merlane Drive.

Brice-Simms was traveling south on Merlane Drive. A police report states that the man failed to negotiate a slight curve and ran off the right side of the road. The vehicle went airbourne and landed in the pond.

Brice-Simms was seatbelted in the driver seat and was unable to exit the vehicle. The passenger, Charlene Taylor Maxwell, 21, was able to kick the glass out and run to a house to call 911.

CFD arrived on the scene and freed Brice-Simms from the vehicle after being submerged under water for approximately 20 minutes.  He was transported to Carolina's Medical Center with life threatening injuries.  Maxwell was transported to Carolina's Medical Center-University with minor injuries.

At 11:20 a.m., Lewis Brice-Simms was pronounced deceased at Carolina's Medical Center due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Evidence of alcohol use was found on the scene and inside the vehicle.
