LINCOLNTON, N.C. -- Police say a Lincolnton man was impaired when he broke into his neighbor's house and then passed out in a nearby field with his infant child by his side.

Clarence Barnette, 46, was arrested Friday and charged with breaking into the home next to his residence while no one was home. He is accused of ransacking the home and removing a revolver, money, and a cordless telepone.

When police arrived on the scene at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, they found the front door kicked in and the inside of the house ransacked. The stolen revolver was discarded in the driveway and neighbors told the officers they saw Barnette leaving the vicinity of the house.

A Lincoln County Deputy called for a detective to come to the scene while police searched for Barnette. He was found lying about 50 yards off the Maiden Highway, passed out with his 20 month old child by his side.

It was about 40 degrees outside, so deputies and detectives placed the child in a patrol car to get warm. They contacted the Department of Social Services, who took custody of the child.

Officers placed Barnette under arrest and recovered jewelry, money, phones, prescription pills and a stuffed toy taken from the victim’s home.

Barnette was charged with one felony count each of Breaking and Entering, Larceny after Breaking and Entering, and Possession of Stolen Goods.  He was charged with one misdemeanor count each of Child Abuse and Failure to Appear.  He was placed in the Harven A Crouse Detention Center under a $17,500 secured bond.
