BELMONT, N.C. -- The man responsible for striking a former Belmont mayor in February plead guilty Tuesday morning in Gaston County Superior Court.

Lester Norman plead guilty to second degree murder of former Belmont mayor, Kevin Loftin, and Donna Dietz. He will serve 258-322 months in prison for second degree murder, 41-62 months in prison for alluding arrest with a motor vehicle causing a death, and a 30 day sentence for reckless driving.

Norman sped through a license checkpoint one night in February 2012, ran a red light and struck the car driven by Loftin. Loftin's car spun out of control, striking a telephone pole.  Loftin and the passenger in the car, Donna Dietz, were killed in the crash.
