Millions of people across 43 states and the District of Columbia are shelling out tens of billions of dollars for a chance to win half a billion in tonight's Powerball drawing.  The pot is a record $550 million this year: enough to set the winner up for life, but nothing compared to the amount lottery organizers raked in with ticket sales.  So with the fiscal cliff looming over every news feed lately, we have to ask: should the government launch its own lottery to help cover the national debt?
