CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Lawmakers have allowed the Charlotte mega church to build its eighth worship center in Ballantyne.

The Charlotte City Council approved Elevation Church's rezoning request Monday night.

The plan includes a 1,600-seat sanctuary as well as a 250-seat office building.

Workers will construct the center at the intersection of Lancaster Highway and Johnston Road.

However, residents around the area said they felt worried about additional noise and traffic congestion the new center might bring.

Lawmakers in Raleigh said they wanted to stop the residents from filing a petition against the rezonings. Head of the Real Estate & Building Coalition Joe Padilla also said getting rid of the petition would be beneficial.

"It quite frankly prevents a lot of pieces of property in Charlotte from actually getting redeveloped because the developers and property owners cannot in many cases get past that hurdle," he said.

A protest petition kept a Walgreens and office building from being built last November in Dilworth.

The State House has passed the bill, and many expect the Senate to pass it, as well.
