MONROE, N.C. -- A Union County jury convicted a Monroe man of murdering his neighbor back in February of 2010.
Lamate Anderson was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole in the murder of Yolanda Simon.
It took the jury less than two hours to reach their verdict.
The prosecution alleged that on February 28, 2010, Anderson took a knife that was from his home on Crooked Creek Court and walked across the street to Yolanda Simon’s home. Anderson knocked on Simon's door, and when she answer, he stabbed her several times without warning.
Simon died when she was stabbed in the neck. Her six-year old daughter witnessed the murder.
Anderson was charged with murder and apprehended by the Monroe Police Department.
Anderson unsuccessfully tried to convince the jury that he was insane at the time of the murder.
