N.C. Agencies Not Using Prescription Drug Database

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)--A computer database that could help officials track prescription drug abuse is getting little use by North Carolina's doctors and pharmacies.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that only about one third of North Carolina's doctors and about one-fifth of the pharmacies are registered to use the system.

The system started in 2007 to allow doctors and pharmacists to see if patients are visiting a number of doctors to obtain prescriptions for controlled substances.

William Bronson with the Department of Health and Human Services says North Carolina's usage rate is similar to other states.

Attorney General Roy Cooper wants to know why the numbers are so low.

Union Republican Rep. Craig Horn wants the state to require doctors and pharmacists to register for the system.
