NC High Court To Decide If Video Sweepstakes Illegal

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Adam Green likes to play Sweepstakes games. "I have fun every time I go." said the South Charlotte Resident. He hopes North Carolina's highest court won't shut them down later this week. "I'd be a little disappointed. It's a good way to have fun and make money at the same time," said Green.

Sweepstakes machines have cropped up since the state legislature outlawed video poker back in
2006. Sweepstakes boosters said there's no gambling involved because the status of a prize is predetermined. Opponents said they feed gambling addictions."I'm a Christian, I don't believe gambling is  that that right but its a personal choice," said Plaza Midwood Resident Patrick McClellan. West Charlotte Resident Delonte Taylor said, "It opens the  door for other illegal activities."

The State Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments on Wednesday. Adam Green hopes the hobby that has made him a lot of money won't go away anytime soon. "I'll definitely be looking at the news to see what the final decision is," Green said.

Justices are expected to hear two sweepstakes cases this week. Amusement machine companies and others contend their business is entitled to constitutional free speech protections.
