N.C. Warns Nearly 8K Employers of Data Mix-up

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)--North Carolina's jobs service is warning about a mistake that could expose the nearly 8,000 employers and people claiming unemployment benefits to identity theft.

The state Division of Employment Security said Wednesday the problem is due to a computer error that led to letters containing Social Security numbers, names and other data being mailed to incorrect employer addresses.

The letters were mailed over a period of nearly three weeks ending April 10. The state agency says it has no indication that personal or business information was retrieved from the letters.

Employment security division assistant secretary Dempsey Benton says the incident was reported to consumer credit reporting agencies and the state Attorney General's consumer protection division.
