No Hot Water for You!CHARLOTTE, N.C. - "We didn't have any yesterday and this morning. So I haven't showered since Saturday," says UNC Charlotte freshman Olivia Robertson. She says the hot water in Moore Hall and next door Sanford Hall hasn't worked properly in weeks. The campus is buzzing about it. "It was snowing Saturday and we didn't warm water then," says Robertson. She started asking university officials to help more than two weeks ago. Her resident advisor sent emails, too. Freshman Claire Dodd also contacted school officials. "We've done everything we can, we've sent consistent emails out and it's not working obviously," says Dodd. UNC Charlotte officials tell WCCB News that construction is the culprit. Crews accidentally removed one of the hot water pipes that feeds the two residence halls. One pipe remains, but it's not enough to supply the two high rises. We're told contractors are "working quickly." New piping will go in on Tuesday. The water will be chlorinated on Wednesday. It'll be tested on Thursday and should be "normal" on Friday. "They keep saying it should be fixed or we'll get it done as soon as possible. But I'm not going to take that as a promise," says Dodd. The young women pay about $2,500 a semester for room and board. They want the university to address the financial aspect of this inconvenience, too. "I think they should deduct some money that we're paying. This is unfair that we're paying for what we're not getting," says Dodd. School officials emailed students and offered them a coupon for a free pizza because of the hot water inconvenience. Until the issue is fixed, they say students can use the showers in other dorm buildings or campus gyms. |
