Pedestrian Dies After Week in Hospital

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Police say a man hit by a car in east Charlotte has died. On Friday, June 8, James Leake, was walking across The Plaza near 35th Street when he was struck by a motorist traveling in the outbound lane. According to investigators, Leake was not in a marked crosswalk and was walking against the traffic signals at the intersection.

After the crash, the driver of the Toyota, Petula Kwende, stopped her vehicle and remained at the scene. Ms. Kwende was interviewed by detectives before being transported to Carolinas Medical Center with life threatening injuries.

On June,15,2012 at 4:30 am, Mr. Leake was pronounced deceased due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Police say, speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident. No charges are being sought at this time.
