Bullet Proof Vest Saves Police Officer's Life During ShootoutHICKORY, N.C.-- The routine serving of a search warrant turned into a shootout, with two people shot, one being a Hickory Police Officer. According to police, officers were serving a search warrant for controlled substances at a home on 31st Street Court SE when one of the occupants started shooting at officers. One officer was shot in the chest, but his bulletproof vest prevented injury. Five officers returned fire, one of them hitting Michael Lee Watson, 40, who lived in the house. Watson was brought to Catawba Valley Medical Center for treatment of non life-threatening injuries. A female and two young children were inside the home at the time as well. Kenneth Alexander Hewitt, 21, was arrested and charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official. Hickory Police Department requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation. The Hickory Police Department will conduct a separate administrative investigation of the incident. The five officers will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation which is standard procedure. Hewitt was placed in Catawba County Detention Facility under a $500,000 secured bond. Additional charges may be issued after the investigation is completed. |
