HICKORY, NC – (UPDATE):  Crews searched some land in Burke County Tuesday evening looking for the remains of 10-year-old Zahra Baker.  The girl's disappearance is now a homicide investigation.

Elisa Baker, the stepmother of Zahra Baker, has confessed to Hickory Police that she wrote the ransom note that had been found.  She has requested a lawyer, and is saying nothing else at this point.  She now has an arrest warrant for obstruction of justice.

The Amber Alert has now been cancelled and has turned into a homicide investigation.  Police can not confirm with confidence how long Zahra has been missing.  They believe a home inspector had been at the house sometime in the last few weeks and are asking that person to come forward.

10-year-old Zahra Baker was reported missing on Saturday, but Hickory Police think she disappeared before then. Investigators are having trouble finding anyone who has recently seen the little girl.

“We need teachers, we need doctors, we need store clerks, we need anyone that has seen the girl in the last week… the last month… anything that they feel is important for us to know. We need the public to call us,” said Hickory Police Chief Tom Adkins.

Investigators are working to create a timeline of Zahra’s disappearance. They’re questioning the statements originally given by the little girl’s father, Adam Baker, and stepmother, Elisa Baker. Police say the couple originally told them the 10-year-old was asleep in her bedroom early Saturday morning, and she was gone when they checked on her that afternoon. Police also say the statements from Elisa Baker have been inconsistent.

Investigators say they found a ransom note in the home, but they are questioning its validity.

Police have not named any suspects in the disappearance of Zahra Baker, but they say Elisa Baker is a person of interest. During the search of the home on Sunday, police arrested Elisa Baker on unrelated charges including writing bad checks.
