ROCK HILL, SC- Gun talk got people fired up in Rock Hill Monday night. Hundreds of people packed an auditorium to talk about a proposed gun law about packing heat. Most of the crowd in support of a proposed law that would take away the training and permitting process to carry a gun. "People are so scared of what's going on in our country as a whole and they want to see the leaders of South Carolina step out," said South Carolina Senator shane Martin. Martin is pushing for the Constitutional Carry Act, or Senate Bill 115. It would allow any law-abiding citizen to carry a weapon without a permit. "The second amendment says that I have a right to keep and bear arms. So, why I do I have to go buy a permit and go through the training just because the government says so," said Robert Crandall, a Chester, SC resident. For instructors like Dewayne Saunders who teach concealed carry training classes, passing the law could be dangerous. "We don't allow law enforcement to carry a gun on the street without training and testing. I feel like citizens should be no different," said Saunders, chief instructor at DES Training. Instructors at DES tell me that untrained shooters are a threat to others -- and themselves. "We see the neccessity for professional education and competency training," said Saunders. As far as the public outcry in support of the bill, State Representative Ralph Norman says "There's a fear factor that's all over this country. Not just in South Carolina." The proposed Constitutional Carry Act would not change weapon restrictions on private property or in businesses that prohibit guns. |
