Charlotte, NC - Food Allergy Musician and Advocate Kyle Dine stands in front of a room full of excited, actively participating children and sings, “These strange signs may be the result of an allergy so I'll tell an adult."

He's no stranger to food allergies. He's dealt with them since he was little and says he turned his struggle and his gift for song into a way to help kids cope, “The more support we have for kids with (food) allergies the better."

But for Randi Eccleston and 5 year old Emma it's still a challenge.

Randi says, “It's every parent's worst nightmare to see their kid like that."

Emma, a 1st grader, is allergic to nuts, among other things. She was diagnosed 2 years ago and while it's still scary, a careful diet and an EpiPen have become a way of life.

Randi looks at her little girl and says of a bag containing the EpiPen and some other meds, “We carry this with us where ever we go, right? Just in case."

Kids like Emma aren't alone. A recent study found nearly 1 in 12 children has food allergies and doctors say if your child displays symptoms they need to be tested immediately.

The symptoms develop shortly after eating certain foods and include hives, difficulty breathing & GI symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea.

Dr. Mike LaPuente of the Carolina Asthma & Allergy Center says, “The most common food allergies in children are egg, milk, wheat, soy & peanut."

Doctors still don't know why food allergies are on the rise. They say there is no cure and the only way to handle food allergies is to avoid the foods that cause them.

For Emma support groups like Parents of Allergic Kids (PAK) and special songs make it better.

She says, “Because I'm not the only one."

Dine says that's the point, “This is something that's manageable. We can all do anything in life, we don't have to let it limit us."

The children at the PAK event sing and cheer as Dine sings, “Food Allergies ROCK!"
