Smiling Man = Submissive Woman?

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Submissive to a man just because he smiled?  A study out of the University of Granada in Spain found recently that when a guy grinned at a girl, she followed his instructions even if he made a blatantly sexist statement afterward.

One woman we shared the study with said, "If you're trying to be polite, maybe!"  A man said, "I'd probably get smacked."  Another guy told us, "It (a smile) can be a manipulative thing if you use it in the wrong way."

But one guy told us this: "When a woman smiles at a man though, that may make the man a little bit submissive or [susceptible] to whatever she says, that's what I believe."

That is what a local body language expert we talked to suggests: that a smiling man actually means the woman is in control.  "Giving a smile is a sign of submission.  I would say well, the man was being submissive," says Charlotte-based business facilitator, consultant and coach Savannah Shaw.

She disagrees with the body language expert quoted in a Daily Mail Article, who feels it's a negative thing that women rely on body language more than men.  "I don't myself find that troubling at all though, I find it marvelous," says Shaw.

She suggests that a woman's reliance on body language is another tool in her skill set.  A confident woman - no matter whether a man smiles or not - will not be coerced.  Shaw says, "I heard someone tell me about a year ago, 'it's a man's world.' I think that if your view is that way, it will be that way.  Know your own strength and then nobody can take that away from you."

The researchers in the Smile Study concluded that the man's "perceived warmth" was the reason for the woman's so-called "submissive" behavior.
