SouthPark Neighbors Don't Want High-Rise HotelCHARLOTTE, NC- Neighbors and businesses in SouthPark don't want a high-rise hotel in their backyard. It's quiet and peaceful along Park South Drive and neighbors want it to stay that way. "Serenity, peace and quiet is very important for people who have Alzheimer’s and other forms of memory loss," said Lynn Ivey, CEO of The Ivey. Ivey owns an adult daycare center. She and the owners of Brighten Gardens Assisted Living facility are against plans to build a hotel next door. They say it would bring safety concerns and noise that could drive away their elderly patients. "I doubt that any trees would be remaining at all. They'll have to take out every single tree," said Ivey, who’s business is surrounded by trees. Developers submitted a rezoning request for a five-story, 108-room hotel with an additional two floors for parking. There's already two hotels across the street from the proposed hotel lot. The problem Ivey has with the proposed hotel is it would be wedged in a lot that’s less than an acre. Backing up to the lot is an eight home neighborhood with over 18 small children. Homeowners like Harry Berzack live and walk by the property everyday. He says the hotel would take away privacy. "I don't want to see the top of a hotel and I don't want them looking into my front yard," said Berzack. Berzack and Ivey say they'll fight to the finish to keep developers from breaking ground. Charlotte City Council is holding a public hearing Monday about the rezoning request. It starts at 4p.m. at the Government Center. |
