CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Charlotte is a relationship city and Thursday night, relationships were built and connections made as young professionals gathered in north Charlotte for the first annual Charlotte Chamber YP (Young Professionals) Awards.
 
Chamber YP Board Vice Chair Curtis Watkins says, "To me, it's an opportunity to really recognize those bright professionals in the city who are going to help take us to the next level in the next years to come."

A packed house looked on as awards were handed out for Young Professional Newcomer, Entrepreneur, Non Profit Leader, Business Leader and the finale award: Young Professional of the Year.  CMS Superintendent Dr. Heath Morrison was one of the featured presenters.  He says, "It's just a pleasure to come meet young people that are making a difference that are not only doing significant work but that are doing it in a way that brings honor and respect to our community."

"One of the things that strikes me about Charlotte is you have to be involved and you have to be engaged," says Dr. Cheryl Richards.  She is the CEO and Dean of Northeastern University at Charlotte, the title sponsor of Thursday's event.  Richards says connecting and celebrating youth is a testament to the dynamic way Charlotte operates.  She says, "I don't know that any other cities are celebrating young professionals in this kind of format."

"Young" is defined in this group as under age 40.  There were 40 Charlotte Chamber Young Professional nominations, whittled down to 15 finalists.
