Teen Killed While Attempting To Cross the Street

CHARLOTTE, NC -- UPDATE: A 13-year-old boy who got hit by a car in east Charlotte has died. Jessi Mendoza-Valdez was crossing Central Avenue near Rosehaven Drive on Monday. Witnesses say he stopped in the median, then ran into traffic. The driver is not being charged.

On April 16, 2012 the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Central Avenue. The pedestrian, a 13 year old Hispanic male, was crossing Central Avenue near Lansdale Drive when he was struck by a 1988 Mazda 323 traveling inbound on Central Avenue. The pedestrian had crossed the two outbound lanes of travel and crossed over a landscaped median before being struck by the vehicle. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk at the time of the collision. The pedestrian was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with life threatening injuries.
