GASTONIA, N.C. - It was only an hour after closing when a brazen criminal broke into Akers Pharmacy in Gastonia on Thursday.  Surveillance cameras caught him as he busted the glass front door.  He was only inside for about 60 seconds and seemed to know what he was looking for.

The police report indicates that $80,000 worth of prescription drugs were taken.  The pharmacy owner, Ron Holland, tells FOX Charlotte the thief stole opioids, specifically, hydrocodone and oxycodone.  In fact, he got away with more than half of the pharmacy's supply.

The CDC says prescription drug abuse is an epidemic.  It is the fastest growing drug problem in the country.  And, more people overdose on opioids than heroin and cocaine combined.

Holland says insurance will help with some of the recovery costs.  The pharmacy's front door has already been repaired with stronger, break-resistant glass.  It will be open for business as usual Monday morning.

Security cameras caught different angles of the thief and police may have an idea of who he is.  Detectives are still investigating.
