Ways To Keep Your Energy Bill LowCHARLOTTE, NC- This time of year can bring big changes to your energy bill. From the temperature to decorating for the holidays. Here are some simple ways you can keep cash in your pocket this season. Matt Rutland loves the convenience of his Nest Thermostat, "If it's late at night and I don't feel like getting up and I want to adjust the temp a little bit, I can reach over and grab my phone off the night stand." The Nest memorizes your desired temps and after only one week it automatically adjusts itself. Matt says it can help you save money in the long run, "Heating and cooling makes up 50% of the home's energy usage. You can save up to 20% of that 50% you spend by utilizing a programmable thermostat." Another low cost tip, switch out your incandescent light bulbs! Duke Energy says CFL's are 75% more efficient. Paige Layne is a Duke Energy Representative. She says switching to CFL's can save money as well, "If you switch out just 6 lamps with these bulbs. They will save you over the lifetime of the bulb about $180.00." The energy savings from the free bulbs Duke has handed out this year is enough to power 40,000 homes. If you're decking the halls with a bunch of lights, Layne says Duke Energy has a way to help you figure out the cost, "What we've done is create this simple little calculator that customers can estimate how much it's going to mean on their January bill." Using six sets of 100 mini L-E-D lights for six hours, everyday in December will add 4.55 to your bill. |
