Suspect's Name Released in Watauga Deputy Shooting

DEEP GAP, NC -- Authorities have released the name of the suspect involved in a deadly officer shooting. The suspect has been identified as 33-year-old Mitchell Allen Trivette. According to deputies, at 12:50 a.m. on Thursday, officers were dispatched to a home on Hardin Road. Upon arrival, the suspect opened fire, killing 23-year-old Deputy William Mast Jr. The other deputy responding to the call with Deputy Mast fired on the suspect. He was pronounced deceased a short time later.

Sheriff Len. D. Hagaman Jr. says "This is the first time a Watauga County Sheriff Department deputy has been killed in the line of duty, but the fourth law enforcement officer to be killed in Watauga County."

The name of the second officer has not been released. The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
