CHARLOTTE, NC- Local newlyweds are proving age ain't nothing but a number! Their nursing home nuptials will go down in the books and they hope it proves there's still a lot of life in assisted living facilities. "He rolled up beside me and said hey what's your name. I told him and he said my name is David, let's get married!" said Hilbreth. A first and last impression. "From then on, we would meet in the courtyard in the mornings and have our coffee. And that's where our courtship took place... in the courtyard," said Hilbreth. Three months later, her now husband David moved out of the facility. But before he left, he proposed and got a reluctant "yes" from the 25 year divorcee. "Wasn't looking for anybody, didn't really want anybody, but God just kinda dropped him in my lap," said Hilbreth. The nursing home offered to put on the wedding at the facility on Valentine's Day. Bryan Rife, the admissions director, turned to Facebook to make it happen. "Within two days, we had her wedding dress, the wedding ring, the wedding cake, the wedding flowers," said Rife. "They had less than two weeks to prepare for it and it was in my opinion, it was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen," said Hilbreth. The wedding was live-streamed online for anyone to see including other nursing homes. That got them lots of support. Dozens of people sent letters and cards from around the country. Joan says she's sure there's one big question on your mind. "How can that happen in a nursing home? Well, we are here to show you it can!" Joan hopes to recover from back surgery and start walking again so she can move out and start her married life at home with her new husband. |
