What The Equal Signs On Facebook Mean
CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Facebook and Twitter users are coming together online to take a stand for equality.
The Supreme Court begins hearings on gay marriage today in Washington, and people everywhere are changing their profile pictures to a pink equal sign against a red background to show their support.
The trend was started by the Human Rights Campaign, which advocates equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people.
In the past 24 hours, the photo received over 25,000 likes and 78,000 shares on the group's Facebook page. When actor George Takei changed his profile picture to the image, reports say over 40,000 fans hit the like button.
The topic has been discussed so much on Twitter that the word 'Supreme Court' is currently a trending topic. Time will tell if social networkers have an impact on the Court's decision.
