Problem Intersection In Southpark
Even brick and mortar will yield to violent impact and it has here. This is the corner of Sharon Lane and Sharon Road and the traffic coming from Sharon Lane is the problem. Nearby resident Katy Pendergraft says "I think it's a huge concern."
According to the city there have been 34 crashes at this intersection in the last five year and four involved the brick wall. Within the history of the number of accidents at this wall this latest one is relatively tame because the brick wall is still standing but there are many who live and work in the area who remember accidents that have been much worse. Robert Brenes recalls such an accident involving his friend. "The wall just wasn't forgiving so when he hit it it pretty much crushed his car he had to be extricated by the fire department then the car caught on fire."
Brenes says his friend survived but was in recovery for months. Residents like Katy Pendergraft constantly worry about the intersection, "you shouldn't wait until someone is killed and probably a teenager and I don't accept that." Brenes adds "you tell your kids when you're driving through there be careful because if they hit that wall I don't think an airbag is going to be enough."
City Councilman Andy Dulin says the city needs to do more saying "now CDOT, Charlotte dept of transportation can do a better job I think warning drivers.
The city department of transportation says this intersection is safe as long as people obey the speed limit but residents say as long as this wall is here there must be something more the city can do.
