BALLARAT, AUSTRALIA--A 12-pound gold nugget was found in Ballarat Australia by an unknown prospector in an unknown location.

Cordell Kent, owner of Ballarat Mining Exchange says a prospector heard a faint alert on his detector so he scooped up a pile of leaf mulch before digging.

The Miner thought he had found a gold car part but to his surprise uncovered a huge nugget of real gold.

Kent says the $300,000 nugget was found nearly two feet below the surface, and its rarity multiplies the value.
