PENSACOLA, F.L.--After purchasing the contents of a storage unit, officials were called to the scene and discovered cups and jars filled with human brains, hearts, and other organs.

The storage unit was being rented by Dr. Michael Berkland, a former medical examiner.

Authorities say the organs were being stored in soda cups and plastic food containers that were filled with formaldehyde. Many of the cups were cracked and leaking.

According to officials Berkland was fired in 2003 because he was not completing autopsy reports. They also say he was conducting private autopsies while working for the medical examiners office.

Police say they do not believe the organs were being sold or used because the conditions of the organs were so poor.

It will be difficult to identify who the organs came from because there were few labels.

Workers and management say there was not any unusual activity from Berkland that would have made them alert officials.
