ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- Police say a New Mexico couple left an 8 year-old girl with developmental disabilities in a wooden cage while they went to see a movie.

Cindy Patriarchias, 33, and Edmond Gonzales, 37, took her three children to watch a movie on Friday, according to police reports. The cops were called when Patriarchias' estranged husband arrived at the school and learned that the 8 year-old was left alone at their mobile home.

Officers found the girl in a homemade wooden cage in the corner of the bedroom. The cage was 2 1/2 feet wide and 4 feet tall with a baby crib mattress inside. She appeared to have no physical injuries.

Patriarchias had reportedly been trying to adopt the young girl, who suffers from microcephaly, but had not been able to reach her birth mother for consent.

Patriarchias has been charged with negligently causing child abuse and Gonzales has been charged with negligently permitting child abuse. According to court records, the couple was being held $25,000 cash-only bonds.

The young girl is under the care of New Mexico's child-protection agency.
