Taliban launch coordinated attacks across Afghan capital, 3 other eastern citiesKABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Battles continue to rage in Afghanistan's capital. The Taliban launched a series of coordinated attacks on as many as seven sites across Kabul today. Targets include NATO bases, the parliament and Western embassies. At the same time, militants carried out assaults in the capital cities of three eastern provinces. At least two of the attackers were killed and five people wounded in Kabul. NATO says its forces killed at least five militants in the other cities. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks. A spokesman told The Associated Press in a phone call that the insurgent group had planned the assault for two months to show the extent of their power after being called "weak" by NATO forces. He says Taliban fighters are equipped with a variety of light and heavy weapons and can attack anywhere they want in the country. The Taliban spokesman says today's assault will be followed by a spring offensive. %@AP Links 136-c-08-(Patrick Quinn, AP correspondent)-"similar to this"-AP correspondent Patrick Quinn reports the attack at the base near Kabul was one of several attacks in Afghanistan.
