As an exterior remodeling specialist, with over 50 years of combined construction experience, we’d like to share a few tips to help you protect your home and family from the elements. ROOFING Thousands of people in Charlotte have had their roofs replaced by their insurance companies due to hail and wind damage caused by last year’s storms. It’s important to have your roof inspected after storms, like we experienced last spring, to ensure your first layer of protection against the elements hasn’t been compromised. Much of this damage can’t be seen from the ground but if left unidentified, it could lead to much larger issues in the long run. SIDING Many homes in Charlotte were sided with Masonite, or other hardboard siding products, in the early 80’s and 90’s. If you have Masonite or hardboard siding and it’s warping, rotting or not holding paint, it’s important to have this inspected. We are currently replacing this faulty hardboard siding with a new and improved fiber cement siding product from James Hardie. PAINTING/WINDOWS The final piece of the puzzle when it comes to protecting your home from the elements is painting and wood repair. Your home should be painted every 7 to 10 years at minimum to ensure all exposed wood is properly sealed. Look for signs of stress around old windows, door jams, and soffit and fascia boards. Installing new energy efficient windows, and replacing rotten wood with rot free PVC board, could save you thousands in the long run.
