NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The failure of a device meant to protect the power supply to the Superdome caused Sunday's Super Bowl blackout, according to the stadium's power company. But the company that made the device says Entergy New Orleans had the trip setting too low. The Ravens' victory over the 49ers was delayed 34 minutes early in the third quarter.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Breaking more than a year of silence, Sue Paterno is defending her late husband as a "moral, disciplined" man who never twisted the truth to avoid bad publicity. The wife of the former Penn State coach is fighting back against the accusations against Joe Paterno that followed the Jerry Sandusky scandal, a campaign that started with a letter sent to former Penn State players. She writes that the family's exhaustive response to former FBI director Louis Freeh's report for the university on the Sandusky child sex abuse case will officially be released to the public at 9 a.m. Sunday on

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks and second baseman Aaron Hill have agreed to a new three-year, $35 million contract that runs through the 2016 season. The 30-year-old infielder hit .302 with 26 home runs and 85 RBIs last season. He came to Arizona as part of a trade with Toronto in August 2011 and was a big part of the team's stretch run that won the NL West title that year.

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals and 2011 World Series MVP David Freese (freez) have reached agreement on a one-year contract that avoids salary arbitration. The third baseman hit .283 with 20 home runs and 79 RBIs last season and earned his first All-Star appearance. And Chone (shahn) Figgins has signed a minor-league contract with the Miami Marlins with an invitation to their major-league camp beginning next week.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Blake James has been hired as Miami's athletic director after serving in the job in an interim capacity for the past four months. It was widely expected that James would get the job, which he first assumed on a temporary basis when Shawn Eichorst left for the same role at Nebraska in early October. James' hiring comes with the Hurricanes still involved in an NCAA investigation into the school's compliance practices.
