Hot-shooting High Point tops Appalachian St. 86-64
BOONE, N.C. (AP) — John Brown scored 22 points to lead four High Point players in double figures as the hot-shooting Panthers cruised to an 86-64 win over Appalachian State on Tuesday night.
High Point (2-0) shot 64.5 percent in the first half (20 of 31) compared to 33.3 percent (9 of 27) for the Mountaineers (1-1).
The game was touted as a rematch of their ESPN BracketBuster game from two seasons ago, which Appalachian State won 82-81. But High Point never trailed, breaking open a 16-11 game with a 32-15 run to close out the half. The Panthers led by as many as 30 after the break while shooting 50 percent (15 of 30).
Allan Chaney added 18 points, Dejuan McGaughy 15 and Derrell Edwards 13 for High Point, which dished out 17 assists.
Jay Canty scored 14 of the Mountaineers' 26 first-half points to finish with 23, while Chris Burgess added 16.
