Duquesne edges past Appalachian State 73-72

BOONE, N.C. (AP) — Jerry Jones scored a career-high 22 points and Quevyn Winters hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 31 seconds left as Duquesne evaded an Appalachian State comeback attempt for a 73-72, nonconference win Wednesday night.

The Dukes (3-3) led 47-33 at halftime, but the Mountaineers (1-5) opened the second half on an 18-4 run to tie the game 51-all on Nathan Healy's 3-pointer with 11:08 to play.

The teams exchanged the lead nine times over the final 11 minutes, with Winters' 3-ball proving the decisive blow. Jones hit two free throws with 15 seconds left before Jay Canty made a layup to set the final score.

Jones netted his points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, and also had three steals.

Healy led Appalachian State with 21 points, with Tab Hamilton pitching in 19, including five 3-pointers. Canty had 15 points and 10 assists.
