Florida catcher Zunino wins Golden Spikes Award

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) — Florida catcher Mike Zunino has been selected as the winner of the Golden Spikes Award, given to the nation's top amateur baseball player.

Zunino, the No. 3 overall pick by Seattle in last month's draft, beat out Stanford right-hander Mark Appel and North Carolina State lefty Carlos Rodon for the award, announced Friday night on MLB Network.

The award is the latest in a lengthy list of honors for Zunino, who also was named Baseball America's player of the year, the Johnny Bench Award winner as the nation's top catcher and the Dick Howser Trophy winner, given to the college baseball player of the year and presented by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

UCLA pitcher Trevor Bauer, now with the Arizona Diamondbacks, won the Golden Spikes Award last year.
