Late MLB players' union head Weiner remembered
NEW YORK (AP) — Late baseball players' union head Michael Weiner is being remembered at a memorial service for his courage and grace after being diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor.
Retired infielder Craig Counsell, former union chief Donald Fehr and Rabbi Ellen Lewis were among the speakers Monday night. Retired All-Star outfielder Bernie Williams played a guitar version of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game."
The crowd that gathered at a Manhattan night club included former Chicago Cubs President Andy MacPhail and Major League Baseball Chief Operating Officer Rob Manfred.
Weiner died in November at age 51.
