CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte Bobcats are not winning many basketball games.

But they are winning friends around Charlotte based on owner Michael Jordan's latest directive.

Jordan has ordered that the team become more involved in the community.

He led by example Thursday, visiting three high schools and announcing gifts to the YMCA's Y Achievers mentoring program. The team and Fox Sports Carolinas/Sports South are giving $200,000 to the program.

YMCA president Andy Calhoun thanked Jordan for the support.

Jordan also surprised one student at each high school with a $5,000 scholarship.

Six students from the Y Achievers program will get paid summer internships.

Team members and the staff visited six Charlotte-Mecklenburg elementary and middle schools for a day of service.
