Gardner-Webb surprises undermanned Charlotte 78-70
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Jon Moore had 24 points and nine rebounds and Gardner-Webb gave Chris Holtmann a win in his head coaching debut by stunning undermanned Charlotte 78-70 on Friday.
A day after the former Ohio assistant Holtmann turned 39, the Runnin' Bulldogs (1-0) overcame a 12-point first-half deficit to spoil coach Alan Major's first game at Charlotte.
The 49ers (0-1), who were down to six players at the end because of suspensions, injuries and two players who had fouled out, got 30 points from transfer Jamar Briscoe but shot 33 percent from the field.
Shamari Spears and fellow starter An'Juan Wilderness were suspended one game Friday for violating team rules. Gardner-Webb, which was 8-21 last season, pulled away when Chris Braswell and Phil Jones fouled out in a 3-minute span in the second half.
Briscoe hit nine of 17 shots and four 3-pointers. Derrio Green added 16 points.
